Our understanding of pink as a baby color precedes the gendering of pink. In the 19th century pink was associated with youth and health and by extension white bourgeois children’s “rosy cheeks.” Pink and blue were interchangeable, gender-neutral “nursery colors” well into the twentieth century (Paoletti, 88).
